These photos below are of the Purdon Conservation area
and are posted here courtesy
of Mississippi Valley
Conservation Authority. The largest natural colony in
Canada (maybe the world!) of Pink Showy Lady's Slipper orchids -
over 10,000 plants - is right here in Lanark Highlands at
the Purdon Conservation area. Every year, the orchids bloom from
approximately the last two weeks in June until early July.
The Conservation area is open
every day from May until October from dawn until dusk and is a
lovely walk even if the orchids are not in bloom. If you
don't like stairs, go to the second parking lot on Concession 8
(off Lanark County Road 8) and start your walk through the Purdon
fen there. You are allowed to bring your dog for the walk as long as
it is leashed and that you abide by the "Stoop and Scoop" rule.
